Source side Deduplication
A major update that will significantly reduce data being backed up and will have a dramatic impact on remote clients. There is a new report which highlights the savings for network and storage pool utilisation
Simultaneous backup, migration, and copy active-data operations
Tivoli Storage Manager continually performs background migrations and makes copies of data in its disk storage pools to ensure that data can be recovered as efficiently as possible. In the past, these operations were performed one at a time and maintenance windows could run up against backup windows. With this release, multiple maintenance operations can run simultaneously, reducing the maintenance window.
Automatic client deployment & update for Tivoli Storage Manager backup-archive clients for Windows
TSM 6.2 now supports automatically upgrading its client software on Windows.
Enhanced support for virtualized environments
VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB)customers can automatically discover new Windows guests. TSM 6.2 also now supports VMware's new vStorage APIs for data protection that come with vSphere 4. Hyper-V snapshots through Microsoft's Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS) are also now supported.
Faster backup of Microsoft Windows environments
Prior to 6.2, TSM performed a full backup of the system state of Windows every time it backed it up. Now it only backs up the parts of the system state that have changed. This could reduce an existing 7GB daily backup to a few hundred megabytes
